WE want a skateboard park and we want it soon. That was the message that went out at Lewes Town Council's annual meeting at Lewes Town Hall on Wednesday.

Local resident John Geall, who is president of Lewes Lions, said the plea for a skateboard park in Lewes had been raised several years ago.

There were still many youngsters in Lewes who were having to skateboard in the streets because there was no proper facility for them.

The matter had even been raised by a boy at a previous Lewes town meeting.

'Will it be my great-grandson who gets to use such a park? When will there be one?' he asked.

The mayor, Cllr John Webber, said there had been several meetings. Plans had been drawn up and a site found between Tesco and the Malling estate. Only the necessary money was lacking.

He felt strongly that a skateboard park was needed. The district council was chasing grants as a priority.

Cllr Rod Wilson said: 'The cost of the park is between 85,000 and 95,000. A bid has been made to Sports England for 60 per cent of that amount. It is now looking positive and the matter should be resolved before the end of the summer.'

Police and Lewes District Council are also putting money in.
