A POPULAR town rector who was often spotted skateboarding, riding a scooter, wearing strange hats or sliding down a children’s bouncy castle, will retire this month after 14 years’ service.
Revd Brian Wilcox, 65, served as rector of Uckfield’s parish church, Holy Cross, together with Little Horsted and Isfield, for 14 years.
He was born in London and began his working life in the offices of the Cunard Line in London.
He trained for the the ministry at Westcott House College in Cambridge and has served the church for a total of 38 years.
He plans to retire to the countryside near Wymondham in Norfolk near the home of his son.
He also has a daughter living in Leeds and another son based in Greenwich in South London.
As you’d expect from such an active man he doesn’t intend to wind down quickly.
He plans to work for the National Trust and as a reader for talking newspapers for the blind.
Brian said he would miss the people of Uckfield.
He said: “I enjoy gardening and am looking forward to a small garden.
“I’ll miss the people of Uckfield and the churches – plus of course my involvement in the St Saviour’s housing project in Framfield Road.
“Also of course, I will miss working with the children at Holy Cross School and Little Horsted Primary School.”
