Sketch of Steyning skate park revealed

New plans for the skate park facility set to be built on Steyning’s Memorial Playing Field have been submitted to Horsham District Council for consideration next month.

Proposed by Steyning Parish Council last June, the Horsham District Council’s Development Control South Committee asked for an operational management plan to be submitted for consideration before granting full approval.

Since, the parish council has been at work to layout the skate park’s maintenance, inspections, signage, monitoring and sanctions in a comprehensive plan. This is also accompanied by sketched designs of the proposed facility.

Chairman of Steyning Parish Council David Barling said: “I’d like people to review these plans and see that the impact is minimal.”

While most of the town welcomed the new state-of -the -art facility for those with skateboards, BMX bikes and scooters, many felt that the choice of location was wrong as it sits on the border of the South Downs National Park.

But Mr Barling reassures residents that the skate park would be partially obscured by a mound in the memorial field.

The plan states the park would be open for public use from 8am until dusk and monitored during this time by police community support officers (PCSOs), neighbourhood wardens and a CCTV camera.

The facility would have a floor area of 1,200 square metres, with a variety of ramps for experts and beginners.

Mr Barling said: “It’s a great thing for the young people of Steyning.”

The committee meeting is due to be heard on Tuesday, February 19.
