Sleepover at DLWP

Spend the night at the De La Warr Pavilion and explore your dreams.

It's a intriguing invitation to take part in a unique art event investigating the hidden realm of dreaming - the Dream Director will take place overnight on April 3 and 4 in the auditorium, and places are limited and must be booked in advance.

Where do people go when they dream? What do they see? What do they experience? These are the questions posed by artist Luke Jerram in the Dream Director.

The event invites people to sleep overnight in a gallery in specially designed pods where dreamers wear eyemasks that detect rapid eye movement, indicating the dreaming stage of sleep.

Each pod is allocated a different bank of sounds, shaping participants' dreams in different ways. When the dreamers reach their dream state, their eye masks trigger ambient sounds via a computer which are played into small speakers mounted into the pod, in an attempt to affect the nature and content of their dreams.

Prior to the sleepover, participants are asked to record what sort of dreams they normally experience, and after the sleepover they are asked to record their dreaming experiences for that night.

Jerram was commissioned in 2007 by Watershed through the Clark Bursary, the UKDigital Art Award, to investigate the complexities of sleep and dreaming. He built upon original research carried out with sleep psychologist Chris Alford at the University of West of England, to create a new installation that merges art, science, and digital media.

As part of a national tour, the DLWP wil be hosting two nights of sleepovers, at a cost of 15 per ticket, and anyone can take part but they will have to answer a few health and safety questions before they book.

The auditorium will be transformed into a sleeping space full of pods, not only for the participants but also for day-time visitors wishing to view the installation - they will also be able to view access documentation about the Dream Director's development, including written information, images, and film.
