SLIDESHOW: Battle Medieval Fayre brings out the crowds

Battle was transformed into a scene from the Middle Ages as the town held its annual Medieval Fayre over the weekend.

Visitors and residents alike were treated to medieval entertainment and merry-making on the Abbey Green on Sunday (May 29) and yesterday (Monday, May 30).

Battle’s resident jester, Devil Sticks Peat, made a welcome return to the popular event, creating mayhem with a mix of juggling, jesting, and general tomfoolery.

Hands on History demonstrated medieval warfare, which also offered the opportunity for people to try on suits of armour and handle medieval weapons.

The group also demonstrated medieval surgery techniques.

The 1066 Lacemakers demonstrated the delicate art of lacemaking while potters offered the chance for younger visitors to try throwing a pot.

Children were also entertained with games and face-painting.

Exhibitors were on hand to offer tempting trinkets, as well as traders providing food, ales and wines, and the Battel Bonfire Boyes’ hog roast.

Yesterday, the May Queen, her princesses and dancers from Battle and Langton School, led a parade down the High Street, accompanied by the Section 5 Drummers.

After the crowning of the May Queen, youngsters showed the adults how maypole dancing should be performed.
