Slideshow: Newhaven Christmas Extravaganza was best ever

A record number of stalls were selling Christmas gifts and produce at Newhaven Christmas Extravaganza on Saturday December 14.

Hundreds of people flocked to the festive event which boasted 40 stalls lining the High Street.

It was jointly by Newhaven Chamber of Commerce and the Newhaven Community Development Association.

NCDA event organiser Sally Foote said: “It was great to see so many people enjoying the shopping and the festivities, special thanks to Veolia Environmental Services whose continued sponsorship of our community events is invaluable.”

Newhaven Chamber of Commerce president Annie Lorys added: “This year’s Christmas Shopping event has been the best ever and I would like to thank everyone that has helped to make it such a great success, all our regular traders and in particular our joint organisers the NCDA, as well as all the volunteers who gave up their time.

“The chamber would also like to thank the Lord Lieutenant and his wife who supported this event and gave so much encouragement to our regular traders. We can’t wait for next year’s event.”

Stalls were selling Christmas gifts, clothes, homeware, cards, home made cakes, mulled wine, exotic meats, mince pies and hot chestnuts.

Trade was brisk and several of the traders said that they had their ‘best day since the market opened’ back in August.

The event was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex and his wife, who were piped in to ‘Sussex by the Sea’ played by the Glynde, Lewes and Beddingham Brass Band.

The Lord Lieutenant came to support the event and to talk to the regular market stall holders who attend the High Street Market every Thursday and Saturday.

Entertainment was provided by Newhaven community choir Haven Harmonies which performed a selection of Christmas music, the Glynde, Lewes and Beddingham Brass Band and the Maestro Academy Players.

Children could visit Santa’s grotto and watch Brillo the Clown.
