SLIDESHOW: Uckfield brought down to earth by defeat at Heathfield and Waldron

After the euphoria of last week’s comprehensive win over Lewes, Uckfield RFC were handed a dose of realism by Heathfield and Waldron on an unseasonably hot afternoon at Cross-in-Hand.

URFC were already weakened by the non- availability of last week’s star man Steve Andre, and influential forward Alex Harle also pulled out on the morning of the game with an eye injury sustained in training on Thursday.

The game started slowly with both sides feeling each other out cagily, although most of the early play was in the Uckfield half. A penalty to Heathfield for feeding at the scrum was followed by a lineout in the Uckfield 22, but this was well defended and excellently cleared by Greg Chappell. However this was followed by a penalty against Uckfield for handling on the floor and a yellow card for no 8 Huw Jenkins. A period of sustained pressure from Heathfield followed against Uckfield’s 14 men. Missing Andre and Harle the scrum struggled against a strong Heathfield pack and lost ball against the head. Determined midfield defence from Martin Chappell and Ryan Teager kept Heathfield at bay and Uckfield won their own scrum penalty to clear.
