Slimming group's pounds boost charities

MEMBERS of St Barnabas' Weigh-In Group, which meets at St Barnabas' Church in Sea Road at 10am on Wednesdays, were happy to be 200 pounds lighter at their Christmas party last week - after donating that amount in Sterling to the church restoration fund.

It was the second £200 raised for the church this year, and group organiser Sally Cowlard, said: “We’ve also got £500 to give to St Michael’s Hospice as a result of fund-raising efforts throughout 2010. That’s going to be presented next month.”

Group members pay £1 at each weigh-in and have held raffles, sold teas and coffees and run a low-fat food stall to help bring in cash.

Some 35 members encourage each other to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, and new members are always welcome at the weekly meetings.

The next will be after Christmas on Wednesday, January 5. Slimmer of the year for 2010 was one of the group’s new members, Jean Dolan.
