Slindon pumpkins go on show

THOUSANDS of people are expected to arrive in the usually sleepy downland village of Slindon over the next few weeks.

Staff at Slindon Pumpkins have put together the annual pumpkin display, which this year depicts a harvest festival scene.

Robin Upton, of the farm, said his late father Ralph started the yearly event in 1968, and it was something he had continued with ever since.

“He used to put the pumpkins on the roof to dry, and people used to come along to see them, so he started making displays,” he said.

Now it attracts people from across the country.

It took about five days to put together this year’s attraction, which features a wheel barrow, fruit trees and a shining sun, and it will remain until about the beginning of November, depending on how long the vegetables last.

The display, with sales of marrows, pumpkins, squashes and gourds, is open from 10am to dusk daily at 4 Top Road, Slindon.
