Slipway delay continues as location for it still debated

Residents of Shoreham are facing yet another delay to the construction of a new public slipway in Shoreham.

An application for a slipway to be constructed for boat users was submitted late last year at the Adur Recreation Ground after years of campaigning from the Shoreham Slipways Group.

But the plans have been delayed due to objections from the Sea Scouts, and a number of other organisations who say the slipway should be moved to the Ferry Road car park, as they view the current location as a safety threat to people on the water.

Now, the group is claiming there are not enough spaces in the Ferry Road car park for vehicles and trailers to get on the water.

Former councillor Liza McKinney said: “The car park has only some 25 spaces for cars, is well-used and at times is so full that there are no spaces left.

“Residents who have lived all their lives on Shoreham Beach, at least one of whom is a very active and lucid 90 year old, have confirmed that there has never been a slipway (there).”

Mike Wooldridge, secretary of the group, said: “When Adur District Council gave planning permission for the new SEEDA development, they ignored the needs of these boat owners and did away with all local trailer parking. Emerald Quay is not much better, and what potential parking there is, is barred to trailers by copious double yellow lines. One has to remember that the parking is just as important as the slipway itself.”

But the group still needs more funding for the slipway, otherwise the plans may not go ahead in either location.

A spokesman for Adur District Council said: “The council is committed to implement the approved enhancement scheme for Ferry Road car park and work is due to start in September. Objections to this scheme from various users of this stretch of the river has forced the Slipway Group to revisit the option of a slipway at Ferry Road.

“To accommodate 20 trailers for a public slipway would require a major re-design of the Ferry Road car park scheme and the Slipway Group has been advised that this would not be supported as it would effectively delay the implementation of the scheme by over a year.”
