Smoking jacket potato

A Robertsbridge woman raised the alarm when she discovered smoke in her home - only to find it had been caused by a baked potato left in a microwave.

Fire crews from Battle and Burwash were called to the property in Brightling Road at 2pm on Sunday following reports of smoke in the building.

The woman told firefighters she could not find the source of the smoke.

Puzzled fire crews searched the building before discovering the charred spud.

Crew commander John Baker said: "After a bit of a head scratch moment, we tracked it down to the microwave.

"It turned out to be a burnt baked potato in the microwave she had forgotten was in there."

He added: "The occupant did not have any smoke alarms, so we did a home check for her and installed smoke alarms.
