A spokesman said: "The majority of these involve minor road traffic collisions, vehicles sliding off roads and abandoned vehicles.

"However, there were also reports of pedestrians slipping and falling and a number of anti-social snowballing incidents."

Advice

Police have advised drivers to check weather forecasts and travel bulletins and to be equipped with warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and a spade.

The police are also asking people to check on any neighbours who may be vulnerable during the cold weather, particularly if they are elderly.
