SNOW CAUSES TRAVEL CHAOS

AN OVERNIGHT snow storm brought East Sussex virtually to its knees this morning (Wednesday).

Trains were badly delayed and there were a number of minor road accidents.

The worst was at Buxted where a car skidded into a gas main at 6.40am. The area was cordoned off. Trains were stopped and some homes were evacuated.

Police warned: 'Unless your journey is essential, don't make it. If you must travel, allow extra time for the journey.'

The county council's 25 gritters were out during the night and again in the morning in a bid to keep at least the main roads clear.

But there were inevitable problems. The A275 through Cooksbridge was a virtual ice rink and traffic was reduced to a crawl.

The road into Seaford Primary School was ungritted. Parents parked at the top of Wilkinson Way and walked their children in.

A Southern Trains spokesman said one hour delays were the norm between Brighton and Eastbourne and Oxted to Uckfield.

A number of schools closed for the day including St Pancras, Lewes; Buxted, Firle, High Huurstwood, Ditchling, Framfield, Lewes Priory, Newhaven Tideway, Ringmer Community College and Chailey Secondary.
