Snowfall shuts Battle town centre

Treacherous driving conditions have closed Battle town centre, following the heavy snowfall.

Battle Hill and the High Street were shut by police this morning (Wednesday) after they were deemed too dangerous for vehicles.

A snowplough, proceeded by a police car, was spotted heading up the High Street at around 8am today.

Meanwhile pedestrians are being warned to take care when walking on slippery pavements.

Last time the snow fell in Battle, the town council received between 20 and 30 complaints from residents that the Highway Authority had not gritted smaller roads and pavements in the town centre.

Peter Mills, Battle town clerk, said: "The town council has taken the initiative and our two men are out with their shovels and spades to grit the pavements.

"We are trying to keep the pavements in the High Street as safe as we can."
