Barcombe Bonfire Society (BBS) has been forced to cancel it's 2016 celebration as it failed to fill a number of vital roles within the society.

Despite a widespread appeal for a new chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer and fundraising secretary, nobody had stepped forward to fill the roles by the society’s EGM earlier this month.

BBS secretary, Charlie Deacon, said: “It is with great regret BBS has decided to cancel celebrations for 2016.

“The EGM only produced very few new faces and failed to fill some executive committee positions. We also failed to gain a core of year-round fundraisers. Year after year this has fallen to the same small group of dedicated people who need a break and if the gap isn’t filled, we cannot continue.

“Secondly, we are having to vacate our storage and preparation premises. We are yet to find somewhere new and without this, organising the business end of the year is impossible.

“It was a hard decision to make by an exhausted committee. Those of us who decided to stay on agreed to continue meeting and fundraising with a view to holding a night in 2017. We are moving with a workable financial base but are lacking year-round manpower.

“We hope we can continue to hold popular events like the summer dance and to hold our night in 2017. However this will only happen if we find a premises and get the support we need from our members and village as a whole.”
