Sound and light show line-up revealed

THE wraps are off Rother's long-discussed three-day sound and light event.

Digital projections, illuminations and streams of light plus artists such as jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine will be highlights of the end of July spectacular, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Pavilion will be the centre of the spectacular. The authority says the event will contribute towards the Queen's Jubilee and Bexhill's Centenary celebrations and signal the council's ambitions for the regeneration of the district, including use of the recently-announced 6m Lottery grants.

"The pavilion will be the backdrop for digital projections, illuminations and streams of light which will highlight the building and the coastline as never before. Architects, artists and engineers in light will create a unique visual experience using walls, cavities, corners, surfaces and clean lines of the architecture."

The musical line-up includes in addition to Courtney Pine, the James Taylor Quartet, Nitin Sawhney and Tindersticks. They will "complement the artists of light and projection who include Yeast and Mark Sutton Vane."

Courtney Pine is one of Britain's leading jazz saxophonists, credited with having transformed the British jazz scene over the past 15 years.

Musician, writer, artists and composer Nitin Sawhney produces a fusion of Asian and Western music and was short-listed for a Mercury Music Prize and awarded the South Bank Show Award for popular music in 2000.

The James Taylor Quartet have played a Hammond organ-led mixture of jazz, funk and rock in its 20-year career of best-selling albums and international touring.

Tindersticks formed in 1992, are an indie band with a cult following. Their music is a fusion of romanticism and indie-rock. The Bexhill date is one of only two gigs the band has chosen to play this year. Full programme details and ticket prices are promised next week. Tickets go on sale next Friday. A thousand tickets are being allocated to Rother residents on a first-come-first-served basis.
