SOUTH DOWNS FACES BIG ISSUES

BIG issues affecting the South Downs in summer 2006 were unveiled at a training day for volunteers working at the Seven Sisters Country Park visitor centre.

A group of 18 volunteers attended the event aimed at preparing them for a new season at the centre which attracted nearly 45,000 visitors in 2005.

Among presentations was one by Phil Belden, countryside manager for the South Downs Joint Committee which manages the centre.

He spoke about the current key issues affecting the South Downs - notably the ongoing National Park designation process.

Sussex Wildlife Trust education staff Mike Murphy and Ronnie Reed spoke on new initiatives for schools and youth groups including the Forest Schools programme which provides an outdoor classroom for youngsters to explore the natural environment while Committee staff Thyone Outram and Robin Hanson provided information on new volunteering opportunities.

Rangers Ann Murray and Robin Thorpe described new attractions at the visitor centre for 2006.
