Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, announced today (May 22) the council will argue that devolving powers from Whitehall to county council level will enable a more co-ordinated approach to delivering better services for residents, improving the economy, and attracting more investment.

The proposed changes could see local authorities gain more fiscal autonomy and additional responsibilities relating to road and rail infrastructure, health and social care, and employment.

Mrs Goldsmith said she will now look to work with other councils across the South East to take forward the work and prepare the case for greater devolved powers to be given to county authorities.

Mr Dawe said with powers being devolved to Scotland, Wales and other places across the UK he felt it was important the South East did not miss out.

He said: “I am wholeheartedly in favour of devolution and the more services that can be provided locally with the responsibility provided locally the better.

“If the district council could play a part then the district council should play their part.

“I think it is absolutely important we are not left out.”
