Southern will relax its policy on carrying cycles during peak times on limited areas of its network from Monday October 22.
The train operator said it had decided to create a new policy on bikes following feedback from cycle-carrying passengers and passenger representatives.
During peak periods, many of its services are extremely busy and currently, non-folding cycles cannot be carried on many of its services during these times.
However following a cycle policy review non-folding cycles will be permitted on some peak-time services on limited areas of the east and west coastway, including between Seaford and Lewes, the Arun valley line, between East Grinstead and Oxted, between Epsom Downs and Sutton and on the Reigate to Tonbridge line.
All cycles carried on Southern trains during peak times must be taken wholly within the new anytime zones.
Fully folding cycles are welcome on all Southern trains at any time.
Southern’s Head of Customer Experience, Emma Toms said: “During morning peak periods, our trains become much busier as they move up the line to their destinations and in the evening peaks, they are extremely busy at the start of the journey. It’s neither practical nor particularly safe to carry non-folding cycles when a train is full.
“However, from 22 October, we’ll be able to accommodate people who want to take their regular sized bikes between stops in certain areas where the trains are not full.”
Southern has produced a new network map showing when and where non-folding cycles are permitted on Southern trains.
This map will be displayed at all Southern stations from 22 October, but can be viewed, downloaded and printed now at: http://www.southernrailway.com/your-journey/cycle-policy/new-cycle-policy
Regular (non-folding) cycles cannot be carried:
On services due to arrive into London/Brighton or Kensington Olympia (the Red zones on the new map) between 07:00 and 10:00 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
On services due to depart from London/Brighton or Kensington Olympia (the Red zones on the new map) between 16:00 – 19:00 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
Regular cycles may be carried at any time on services for journeys made wholly within the Green zone on the new map.
