Southern Water is currently facing three charges at a trial at Chichester Crown Court, which began on Monday.

The charges relate to two alleged breaches of environmental permits and one of discharging untreated sewerage effluent from the East Worthing treatment works into the sea in September 2012.

Southern Water has pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

The Environment Agency claims that 40 million litres of raw sewerage was released due to a failure at the treatment works, resulting in the closure of all beaches between Lancing to Ferring for six days.

The trial is expected to continue into next week.
