They beat the target by ten percent and scooped the Partnership Award at the Water Industry Achievement Awards in Birmingham on April 1.

New technologies which contributed to the success, include automatic leak alarms .

Southern Water is installing water meters for its customers which automatically detect leaks on customers’ supply pipes. With more than 500,000 of these meters being installed by April 2015, they have the potential to save nearly 8 million litres of water each day – enough to supply the needs of 60,000 people, or a town the size of Ashford.

Southern is replacing all 6,000 of its flow and pressure data loggers with more sophisticated models. These devices automatically send flow and pressure information to a control centre to help detect where leaks occur.
