Southwater Iguanodon sculptor’s new project unveiled

Hannah Stewart, who created both the St Leonard’s Forest dragon in Horsham Park and the Southwater Iguanodon, was commissioned for the new piece by the London Oratory School.

The bronze sculpture was unveiled at the school last week and marks the institution’s 150th anniversary.

Hannah was born in Horsham and attended school at Heron Way, Millais and Collyer’s.

She worked on the project alongside the school’s head teacher David McFadden.

She said: “It was a great pleasure to work with someone who cared so much about the final sculpture and its contribution to the school’s daily life and community.

“The final design and composition owed much to David’s clarity and vision, and I’m delighted to see it at the heart of the school.”

The sculpture, entitled ‘Mary and Jesus - Mother and Son’, has been placed in the building’s recently finished atrium.

It is unusual in featuring Jesus as a teenager, similar in age to pupils at the school - rather than a man or young child.

Bishop John Sherrington was invited to the school to bless the artwork on Monday November 17.

Hannah’s work was commissioned by the school in recognition of 150 years of parental support.
