Southwick electricity engineer climbs the career ladder

BRIGHT spark Paul Hosker is celebrating after achieving a Higher National Certificate in power distribution.

The 39-year-old completed two years of study and training with UK Power Networks to gain the qualification.

Paul Hosker, who lives and works in the Southwick area, has been involved with making new connections to the electricity network while being mentored as a trainee engineer.

He said: “I was chuffed to get a place on the Engineering Development Programme.

“I had worked for 15 years in practical, technical engineering roles but never worked for a company prepared to push me up the ladder in terms of education, training and career development.

“To get into this company on a course that catered to my ambitions was brilliant. I have more qualifications to my name now and have learned a huge amount from colleagues who have been on the job for 20 years or more.

“The learning isn’t going to stop at the end of the EDP. There is still a lot I have to learn before I can progress through the technical ranks. I still have another 30 years’ work ahead of me and I want to keep learning and developing my career.”

Paul was among 17 staff to complete the qualification as part of the company’s programme, which provides bespoke training.

The trainees studied during three-week block releases at Warwickshire College every couple of months, while the rest of the time was spent gaining on-the-job experience. They collected their awards from Royal Spa Centre, Leamington Spa.
