Sowing seeds for remembrance

Seeds have been sown by the council’s parks department, with the help of conservation volunteers and councillors.

Lancing councillor Carson Albury joined residents from Adur District Council’s Manor Ward to sow seeds for the remembrance meadow in Lancing Manor Park.

He said: “These meadows have been much admired over the last two years and this year, Adur wants members of the public involved in the sowing.

“There are several areas in Manor Park that have been sown with either a remembrance meadow mix, Old Comrades, supplied by Pictorial Meadows, or the Flanders Poppy alone.”

The Old Comrades mix is dominated by flowers like the Flanders Poppy, which flowers in early summer, but it also includes flowering annuals such as bishop’s flowers, red flax and cosmos bipinnatus, which emerges and flowers after the poppies fade away.

The meadows were first sown in 2014 for the centenary of the start of World War One. Around 30 special beds were created at 11 sites across Adur and Worthing – Adur Recreation Ground, Buckingham Park, Mill Lane Cemetery, Lancing and Sompting Cemetery, Lancing Manor Park, Southwick Cemetery, Beach House Park, Brooklands Park, Durrington, Marine Crescent and West Parade.
