SPACE race on for arts and sports sessions in Littlehampton

CHILDREN and young people are making preparations for SPACE again.

But it’s not the final frontier beckoning them, it’s Littlehampton Town Council’s Sport and the Arts Community Event, five days of free activities later this month.

More than 700 free places are on offer, but with less than a fortnight until the fun begins, they are going fast.

The programme, from August 19-23, offers opportunities to take part in a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports, from squash to croquet, as well as a broad spectrum of creative sessions.

The sports events have been largely provided through local sports clubs, including Littlehampton Cricket Club, Littlehampton Croquet Club and the Sussex Tornados cheerleaders.

Inspire Leisure is also involved, while Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club is running a day-long coaching session.

Members of the Littlehampton Sports Forum have again lent their support by providing facilities free of use.

The SPACE art activities will be led by professional and experienced artists. Options this year include graffiti, street dance, Stomp music and the unique Paint with Light, where children use light, props and their imaginations to create amazing photographic effects.

Paint with Light has staged workshops in schools in this area and will be offering two sessions, one for under-11s and one for over-11s, using more advanced techniques.

SPACE places are available for children aged eight–17, who must live in the BN17 postcode area.

To encourage more of the older age group, some sessions will be specifically for over-11s.

Councillor Malcolm Belchamber, chairman of the town council’s community resources committee, said: “SPACE is a great opportunity for the young people of Littlehampton to get involved in sports and activities they might not usually have access to.

“It gives them the chance to try something new and, hopefully, will encourage them to join one of the many excellent clubs Littlehampton has to offer.”

For a SPACE application form and to check availability of places on the various sessions, telephone the town council on 01903 732063, e-mail ltc@littlehampton-tc.gov.uk or call into the Manor House, Church Street, Littlehampton.
