Spaces still available for soapbox racers

PREPARATIONS are well underway for the inaugural Battle Soapbox Race.

So far 19 teams have entered, or requested an entry form, for the June 30 event.

Pub staff, garages, tradesmen and air cadets are among those who have entered teams and are currently busy working on their soapbox racers.

The event is being organised by local businessman Dale Cromwell and his team in aid of the Battel Bonfire Boyes.

The event is open to 30 teams, with each team required to raise at least £50 in sponsorship to enter.

Dale said: “It seems to be filling up quite nicely which is pretty good.”

Entry forms are still available for the race, but Dale has had to hurriedly drop forms round to people who had already started building their racers - without officially entering the competition.

Dale said: “You do need to fill out an entry form.

“It’s not a ‘turn up and do it’ event.

“If we get lots of people who turn up without entry forms, they cannot race.”

Profiles of the racers will be posted on the Battle Soapbox Race Facebook page shortly.

Meanwhile the TV production team behind the coverage of the Red Bull Soapbox Race in London this summer has expressed an interest in the Battle event.

Entry forms are available from the Bull Inn in Battle, the Battle Soapbox Race Facebook page or via Dale on 07834 049794.

The 266m race track will run down Battle High Street from the junction with Mount Street to cross the finishing line at Abbey Gatehouse.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three fastest times, for the team which has put the most effort into making its soapbox racer and for the team which raises the most money for charity.

All carts must be free running, not motor powered, but must have steering and brakes.

Helmets will be provided. Racers are permitted to use their own motorcycle helmets as long as they comply with British Safety standards.

Gloves must also be worn.
