Spate of chimney fires leads to warning from fire officers

FIRE CREWS were called to a fire which started in a chimney.

It happened in Berry Lane, Littlehampton, at about 4.15pm yesterday (Wednesday, January 6), and was the second such blaze Littlehampton fire crews had been called to in a week, the last being in Stanley Road, Wick, on Saturday.

Community fire safety officer at West Sussex Fire and Rescue, Jackie Boyle, said: "Chimney fires are one of the most common incidents we attend. Properties have lost the roof, first floor or in some cases been completely destroyed.

"It is very important that anyone planning to light their fire gets their chimney checked and swept. The consequence of a chimney fire isn't just the damage caused by the fire, there's the dirt and smell from the soot and smoke, which can affect all of your personal property."

Firefighters spent just under 20 minutes putting out the flames.
