There will be two speakers, Isabel Skrine, the Amnesty International country co-ordinator for Iraq, and Geoff Green from Open Doors, a group which works with Christians living under religious persecution.

The meeting, Iraq and the Islamic State – Hope for the Future?, will be held on Wednesday, at Shoreham Methodist Church, Brunswick Road, Shoreham. Doors open at 7pm and entrance is free. A collection will be held for the two charities involved.

Mr Bedwell said: “Amnesty International reports that killings and abductions by the Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) are mounting as the militants continue their advance on north-west Iraq.

“Fearing for their lives, thousands of terrified Iraqi civilians have fled their homes to escape the violence.”
