Special membership offer for South Downs Society

BACK in 1923, dismayed at the random development of Peacehaven on the chalk cliffs near Brighton, a group of walkers founded today's South Downs Society as the Society of Sussex Downsmen.

As one of Britain's earliest countryside conservation organisations, the society rapidly gained members and influence in seeking to protect the whole length of the Sussex downs.

Since WWII, the society has been involved continuously in commenting on building proposals and other development such a pylons and major road schemes.

This year, to celebrate the granting of a National Park status to the South Downs, the society has launched a South Downs Society National Park Festival of Walks, which is supported by the West Sussex Gazette.

The West Sussex Gazette has helped to promote the walks and strolls and joins the society in thanking everyone for taking part so far.

The South Downs Society is a key guardian of this landscape, from the open chalk ridge east of the Arun, across the wooded downs westward to the heaths of the Western Weald and the steep hanger country of Hampshire.

This week, the West Sussex Gazette has a reader offer enabling readers to support the society's work to protect the beauty of the new South Downs National Park by joining as a member today, and taking advantage of a special 33 per cent discount offer.
