Bob Adams, president of Worthing’s Naval Association, served in the Second World War and was present at the service.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Adams, 92, said: “I was so impressed with the turn out today, it’s tremendous.”

Veteran Clive Bailey’s brother, Bernard, also fought in the Second World War. He was captured at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme in the first six months of the war, before being sent to work in salt mines in Siberia. Despite surviving the war, Bernard died a couple of years later as a result of injuries sustained during his time as prisoner.

Mr Bailey, 81, said: “We thought it was excellent, in particular the number of young people. When we have gone we have still got to do this in memory of those who died.”
