Spectacular parade for Bexhill Horse Show

Rain clouds were rumoured but stayed away from Bexhill Horse Show on Monday.

Competitors and spectators were therefore out in force and the event at the Polegrove was also attended by Bexhill's new Town Mayor Councillor Jimmy Carroll.

Some classes were "full to bursting" - according to the organisers - including the spectacular Parade Horse Class which boasted a showcase of breeds from around the world.

Spanish Andalusians, Portuguese Lusitanos, an Arab, a Haflinger and a French Trotting Horse were included in the line-up.

Many strutted their stuff with riders dressed in traditional costume of their native countries, in front of the judge and crowds of spectators. The judge then had the difficult job of choosing her top six from this diversity of breeds.

The eventual winner was a past UK champion Andalusian stallion, Romero (pictured right), owned and ridden by Geoff Shawcross, who drove over two hours to attend the show and then produced a superb display that left the crowds clapping and cheering for more.

The class was introduced two years ago by Jennie Cunliffe, who owns and competes a Spanish Horse, Dudoso VIII (placed 6th) and was finding it difficult to compete her horse in 'normal' showing classes.

Another popular showing class was the Coloured Horse class, this year won by Judy Blackman and her striking horse Trigger. They are a local pair and regularly compete in showing and dressage.

Show secretary Jennie Cunliffe commented: "We are pleased to say that after a couple of disappointing years, the Driving class was well attended. Hours of meticulous cleaning and polishing create the end result of a perfectly turned out horse and carriage. This year our winner was Fred Matthews with a beautiful turnout."

She added: "There is always so much to entertain spectators at the show and this year was no exception with many displays in the main arena including local dance troop Dyamond Dance, of Wickham Avenue, who provided an energetic routine in the main arena at lunch time.

"Always a favourite and back by popular demand were the Coakham Bloodhounds who paraded throughout the day and were the first attraction to greet visitors on their arrival at the show, keen for cuddles at any opportunity.

"The committee would like to thank all the sponsors and helpers without whom the show would not be possible. Our thanks also to all our competitors, especially those for whom distance proved no hurdle.

"We hope all who attended enjoyed their day and we look forward to seeing you all again next year."
