Speed camera warnings halt

Advance warning to motorists about the presence of mobile cameras on Bognor Regis roads has been scrapped.

This week saw the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership change its system of operation.

Its practice of the past five years of publishing a fixed timetable stating where and when the cameras would be in action has ended.

This has been replaced by a list of 38 locations which could be visited by a mobile camera operator at any time.

For the Bognor area, the locations are: North Bersted '“ Chalcraft Lane and A29 Shripney Road; Aldwick '“ Aldwick Road; Bognor Regis '“ A259 Hotham Way; Aldingbourne '“ A29 Westergate Street.

All the sites will continue to be well-signed and the camera van and operator will still be visible.

Emma Rogers, the partnership's communications manager, said it believed drivers and riders should have learned to keep to speed limits after five years of the mobile cameras, without the need for extra reminders.

"This change allows mobile camera operators to focus on areas of concern, within the list, rather than being constrained to a publicised few.

"Areas that have problems with speeding vehicles can be targeted more directly than in the past to prevent further injuries and deaths from crashes," she said.
