Speed dating gives insight into careers

More than 260 year-nine pupils took part in the event, which was designed to raise awareness of the different types of careers available to them when they leave school.

Students had the opportunity to network with local business representatives from a number of sectors, including banking, childcare, engineering, building, medical and the Armed Forces.

Over two sessions, students interviewed business professionals with questions they had prepared in their personal development lessons.

Many students chose to find out more about which career paths and qualifications were needed for particular professions, along with salary and job satisfaction.

Rosie Wyer, from the Dame Vera Lynn Trust, said: “It was such a privilege to come to this event and share what I do with students. It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to experience the massive variation of careers on offer to them today.”

Mr Leigh Chambers, economic development officer at Horsham District Council, was experiencing The Weald School Careers Speed Dating for the first time.

He said: “This was such an enjoyable event and a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation when thinking about their future careers.”

Mrs Sarah Wilson, careers and work experience manager, said: “Today has been a big success. Hopefully it has motivated students to explore all options available to them, shown them a wide variety of career paths and started them planning their own future careers.”

The next highlight in the rolling careers programme is the Future Choices Fair on Wednesday, 6pm to 8.30pm. It is free to attend and there will be a wide range of exhibitors.
