Speedwatch volunteer call

Hastings Community Speedwatch, which was officially launched in July last year by Sussex Police, is proving to be a success but police need more volunteer operators.

PCSO Rob Sears, of the Hastings Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “All we need are people who care about their street and are willing to give a couple of hours of their time to carry out speed checks. The speeding vehicles will be entered onto the Community Speedwatch website by the volunteer coordinator and a letter will then be sent to the driver.

“If the same driver is recorded speeding three times, our traffic department will seek to actively target and catch them. It is preferable if you have access to the internet, either your own or a friend, as the scheme is run through online.

“Since the launch 60 warning letters have been sent to drivers to warn them of their speed. So far the highest recorded speed has been 49mph in a 30mph zone. This is a voluntary and very well worthwhile scheme to be a part of.”

Tony Read, volunteer Speedwatch coordinator, said: “There are 16 police wards in Hastings and St Leonards and we need more volunteers to cover them all. If you have concerns about speeding traffic in your area and can spare one hour a week I would encourage you to join the Community Speedwatch. With your help we can make the roads of our town a little safer.”
