Members of Save Yankee Candle Worthing took to the Guildbourne Centre store at midday today in a bid to prove its popularity.

They want the shop, which is due to close on February 1, to be kept open.

Adam Terry from Lancing, who started the Facebook page, said: “It is the only specific and unique shop, dedicated to one thing, that Worthing has. There is nothing like it nearby, the closest is Ashford. We even have people come here from London.

“Sure, there are smaller ranges in other shops but this is a unique experience and the staff give a really good service, helping to source unusual ones.”

He and his wife, Claire, are big fans of Yankee Candle.

Adam explained: “We have been together for 4½ years and were married in November. The first time she came over to my flat, she suggested Yankee Candles and since then we have really got into them.”

On the first night alone, the Facebook page had more than 500 likes and now has more than 2,650.

There will be a second ‘spending spree’ campaign tomorrow at 1pm, with about 30 people already committed.
