Sponsored roundabouts in the county to be improved

ROUNDABOUTS in West Sussex - the ones on roads, not fairgrounds - are to be put on a new business footing.

But the aim will be to bring about improvements to the street scene, rather than make a profit.

A county cabinet report reveals that the county council is planning to hire a 'suitably qualified company' to undertake the marketing and management of sponsored roundabouts.

The contract is due to start in February, 2008, for a period of five years, with the option to extend it by up to two years, subject to satisfactory performance.

The report, approved by Cllr Tex Pemberton, the county cabinet member for highways and transport, said there were about 170 roundabouts in West Sussex, and the county council had operated a roundabout sponsorship scheme for about 10 years.

"Currently, about half the roundabouts are sponsored, and the goal of the council is now to increase that proportion with a view to having all its roundabouts environmentally enhanced and maintained to a high standard in as short a time as possible," it added.
