Spooky time

VINES CROSS enjoyed a pyrotechnics extravaganza last week.

The village's bonfire society held its annual celebrations on Hallowe'en and, fittingly enough, a spooky theme ran thoughout the proceedings.

A fancy dress competition held for school children attracted more than 20 entries, with youngsters dressing up as ghosts and zombies.

The winner was Rebecca Hope and runner-up was Hannah Overy.

The traditional torchlit procession then made its way around the village. The procession was led by the Barcombe Scout Band while the Hastings Samba Band brought up the rear.

Pip Bourne had the honour of starting the evening's explosive display when he came out top in last year's auction to find who depresses the detonator which ignites the bonfire. However, he graciously handed over the duties to local youngster Ben Llewellyn.

Villagers then stood back and admired the 2,500 worth of fireworks.

To conclude the evening's events, 575 was raised during the auction to find next year's firestarter.
