Spring has sprung at Crowhurst

The annual event was held at Crowhurst village hall on Saturday March 18. Dozen’s of entries set the hall ablaze with dazzling colour from floral, handicraft, photography and cooking displays.

Crowhurst & District Horticultural Society’s chairman, Mary Boorman says it was a day that truly showcased the talents of the local community. “We had a really great show and we felt that Spring had well and truly Sprung in Crowhurst,” she said. “The hall looked so bright and the colours and scents of Spring were amazing.”

Mary said there were a record 140 entries to the show. “These included individual and members entries, and several local children’s entries from village clubs and groups who all displayed some very inspiring and colourful items. “They were really lovely and heart warming, I thank them all for enhancing the show with their entries.”

After the entries were judged the show was opened to the public. Mary said: “It was a really happy and busy time with lots of visitors attending to view the entries and enjoy a slice of Nonna’s tasty homemade cakes.”

Visitors were also enjoyed a talk by PhD student Sarah Duddigan. Sarah has been working on a collaborative project between the University of Reading and the Royal Horticultural Society, investigating the effects of adding organic matter (ie compost) to garden soils. Mary says Sarah’s talk on ‘The Tea Bag Challenge’ went down a storm and people were inspired, adding “We thank Sarah so much for coming all this way just to be with us for such a short time. “People really enjoyed the talk and we hope to have Sarah back when she has completed her studies and gained her Doctorate later in the year.

“Thank you so much to everyone who entered, helped and visited the show. It was a real pleasure to have such a great happy afternoon as we celebrated the start of this magic season ‘Spring’ which, as gardeners, we welcome with open arms and this show certainly highlighted that fact today.

“I was delighted the show went off so well as such a lot of work goes on behind the scenes for months to organise these events. Without entries, helpers and visitors shows could not take place.”

The show concluded with a raffle and the distribution of trophies and awards to prizewinners.
