Spring is in the air at flower show

Mannings Heath & District Horticultural Society are once again pleased to report the success of their Spring flower show on Saturday April 2. Of course the lovely weather helped to bring out the visitors.

The hall was filled with the scent of flowers and delicious home made cakes, biscuits and scones. It was a great pleasure to see that there were many new exhibitors and the committee hope they were encouraged to return for the summer show in August.

Those who entered two of more exhibits were given a Fuchsia plug plant and three dwarf sunflower seeds to grow on and bring back for the summer show. Visitors were able to buy one if they wished to join in.

There were many entries in the photography section which is increasingly popular and it was good to see that the men enjoy entering the cooking and preserves just as much as the ladies. In fact a man won the marmalade class with another winning the sausage roll and cheese scones. There were also eight entries in the children’s class who designed a birthday card in celebration of the forthcoming Royal Birthday.

Jeremy Quin, our local MP dropped in to visit and stayed for a little while. He kindly presented the cups to Chris Hart who won the best in show for her delightful flower arrangement and also most prize money in the daffodil classes. Jeremy commented: “It was a joy to see some wonderful creations – not just floral but also Birthday Cards for the Queen from local children. The show has been going 86 years and it is great to hear the number of show entrants is on the up.”

A huge thanks to everyone who helped, entered and also visited and we look forward to seeing everyone and more at our Summer Show August 20. For more information please contact David Hilliam 01403 264732
