Sprinklers saved the day after blaze at nursing home

An electrical fire in a Brighton nursing home could have had more serious consequences if it hadn't of been for the sprinkler system.

That’s according to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service , which is now calling for more sprinklers to be installed in homes and businesses after a fire was ‘prevented from taking hold in a nursing home’.

Crews from Brighton, Roedean and Hove were called to a nursing home on Stanford Avenue at 4.55pm yesterday (May 14), after staff discovered a small electrical fire in a resident’s room when a fire alarm went off.

But a sprinkler system in the home operated within a matter of minutes, limiting the blaze to one room and putting the fire out.

Andrew Gausden, business safety manager at East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: “As demonstrated in this case, sprinklers can significantly reduce fire, heat and smoke damage. The good news is that they have become more accessible and cost effective for installation in commercial and residential premises.”
