Uckfield Leisure Centre in Downsview Road is starting drop in squash sessions for 8-16 year olds. They will run every Monday evening from 5.30pm-6.30pm until further notice.
Players of all abilities, including beginners, can take part. Qualified squash coaches will help develop their skills as youngsters play a variety of other players of a similar age and standard.
There is no need to book; all you have to do is simply turn up, pay and play. Each session costs £3.
Natasha Brown, community sports development officer for operators Freedom Leisure, said: “The drop-in squash sessions will give children the chance to try their hand at the sport, learn from qualified coaches and develop their game without the pressure or commitment of joining a squash club. Those youngsters who achieve a high level of competence will be introduced to local squash clubs if they wish to take it further, while others are very welcome to drop in as often as they wish to play for fitness and fun.”
Wealden and East Sussex County Cllr Claire Dowling said: “I’m very pleased to see Freedom Leisure dedicating an hour of its squash court timetable each week to this age group, as we continue to build on the legacy of last year’s London Olympics.
“The beauty of these supervised sessions is that children can come when they feel like it and are guaranteed an opponent, some professional coaching and a match to enjoy. It’s a great initiative and I hope local families take advantage of the opportunity.”
