St Catherine's head teacher will not return

PARENTS at a Littlehampton school have succeeded in their battle to stop its head teacher returning.

St Catherine's Catholic Primary School in Highdown Drive was placed under special measures in June, 2006, after Ofsted inspectors found serious failings in its leadership, management and standards.

Since then, the head teacher Adam Lenkiewicz has been on long-term sick leave, but news that he was about to go back to work sparked angry protests from parents who campaigned outside the school gates against his return.

While the battle raged between the protesting parents and others who supported Mr Lenkiewicz, Arundel and Brighton Bishop Kieron Conry stepped in to appeal for calm for the sake of the children.

Now, a letter handed out to parents at the school last week has revealed the head has chosen not to return and that four other teachers will also be leaving.

In the third inspection since the school was put under special measures, Ofsted inspector Stephen Long found the school to be improving.

He said: "Although standards in all years remain below national averages, the progress made is gaining momentum and the pupils are beginning to make up the ground they have lost."

The inspector also praised acting head teacher Gill Howell for her "good leadership and stability".

Paula Merridue, who took her daughter Robyn, eight, out of school to be taught at home, said: "I'm thrilled to hear the good news from the school.

"Our actions were based on the Ofsted report and not personal.

"I hope for everybody's sakes, the children, parents and Mr Lenkiewicz's, that this is a happy ending and that the children get the education that they deserve.

"Unfortunately for my daughter, there is a long waiting list for schools in the area and she's still being taught at home. After the summer I may consider taking her back to St Catherine's if there is a place for her there."

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: "We can confirm that Mr Lenkiewicz has decided not to return to the school due to health problems following a lengthy absence.

"In his letter to parents, Mr Lenkiewicz felt the school would benefit from a new head teacher in more robust health. Four other members of staff are also leaving.

"Arrangements are in hand to appoint a new head teacher in time for the school year beginning in September."
