St Leonards care home still in special measures

Clyde House, in Sedlescombe Road North, remained in special measures following an unannounced inspection in May, according to a CQC report released on July 2.

The home was placed in special measures in October last year following an ‘inadequate’ inspection where seven breaches of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 were found.

Speaking about the initial inspection, the CQC said: “We found significant risks to people due to the management of nutrition.

“Staff did not have relevant risk assessments in place to ensure their safety.

“People in the service did not receive care and support that was individualised to their needs and people were not always treated with dignity and respect.

“People had not been protected against unsafe treatment by the quality assurance systems in place.

“There were also concerns relating to the management and leadership of the practice, specifically in the well led domain.”

Following last year’s inspection, the CQC received an action plan from the home.

However, after concerns were raised in February, a focussed inspection took place to look at people’s safety.

It found concerns were substantiated and there were continued breaches of the Health and Social Care Act.

During the inspection in May, inspectors found ‘some action’ had been taken to make improvements but the management of ‘risk to individual people’ remained.

“Improvement was still needed to ensure people received support in a person centred way and were treated with dignity and respect,” said the report.

“People were still not receiving support that was individualised to their needs.”

Inspectors found accident and incident reporting had taken place but documented investigation and measures to ensure learning and prevention was lacking.

Concerns were also raised about a lack of ‘clear leadership’ and differences in meal delivery and quality over the course of the inspection.

The home, which can care for up to 48 older people, was rated ‘inadequate’ in two out of the five inspection areas – being safe and well-led.

It was rated ‘requires improvement’ in the effective, caring and responsive areas.

A spokesman from the home said: “We have been working very hard to address the concerns raised during previous CQC inspections. In that time we have put in place a comprehensive action plan to improve care standards in all areas within the home.

“While progress has been made, there is still work to do, and we are working with both the CQC and the local authority to achieve this.

“The staff team at the home, with regular and ongoing support from the leadership team, are committed to providing the standard of care that residents and their loved ones expect and deserve.

“We’re determined to ensure that Clyde House improves and has a positive future.”

Clyde House will remain in special measures and be inspected again in six months.
