St Michael’sHospice VE Daycelebrations

People who are supported by St Michael’s Hospice Day Services joined together to celebrate the 70th anniversary of VE Day on Friday May 8.

The event, held in the Day Services room at the Hospice, included an inspiring talk from the Royal British Legion, followed by a two course meal.

Live entertainment was provided by Lucinda Anderson with period Piano and Violin period music. Royal British Legion Veteran Mr Hayward gave a talk on the origins of the poppy and the origins of the Last Post and St Michael’s Chaplain Geoff Cook offered Victory in Europe prayers and pledges.

Those who attended took along pictures and memorial artefacts to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of VE Day, including, photos, ration books, gas masks, items of clothing and hand written letters.

Among those gathered to mark the special occasion included Ruby Hagger who said she was very impressed with how well the day was organised, adding: “Everyone had a lovely day; a fitting tribute to the 70th Anniversary of VE Day.”

Audrey Stevenson said both she and her friends enjoyed the celebrations, and aid: “It was full of fond memories with period food and entertainment.”

Jay Godding, Day Services Manager, St Michael’s Hospice, said it had been a “very special day”, adding: “We were delighted so many of the people we support were able to join us for the celebration.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere and the room was superbly decorated, with all the items that were brought in for us to remember the celebrations from 70 years ago.” www.stmichaelshospice.com
