Staff at Worthing Hospital praised at awards

VALUED volunteers and hard working staff have been recognised at a hospital trust’s awards ceremony.

More than 150 staff from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Worthing, Southlands and St Richard’s Hospital, gathered for the trust’s Patient First Star Awards.

Among the winners was community midwife Ruth Roe, who won Employee of the Year for her work with pregnant teenagers.

Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Pat Peal, from Worthing, a Knowing Me volunteers who helps patients with dementia while during their time in hospital.

Marianne Griffiths, chief executive of the trust, said: “I am so proud to work with such wonderful colleagues, and not just our very deserving winners, but all our staff who with passion and vigour do their best to put our patients first, every day.

“Following another record year for Western Sussex Hospitals, in which we cared for more people than ever before, we received a record number of nominations for our staff awards, including more from patients and the public than ever before.

“I would like to thank everyone who put an individual or team forward, as well as commend all those who were nominated, but especially our 2015 Patient First Award winners – they are without exception inspirational people to work with. Heartfelt congratulations to them all.”

The Compassionate Care Award went to Harvey’s Gang, a project started by biomedical scientists at the trust who invite young cancer patients into their laboratories.

Mentor of the Year was awarded to Mr Shafique Sajid, who received 11 nominations from junior doctors, who described him as ‘one of the hardest working surgeons and a wonderful teacher’.

Mike Viggers, chairman at the trust gave the Chairman’s Award to the team at the Medical Day Case Unit at Worthing Hospital.
