COMMUNITY NEWS & REVIEWS: Just a short update of the results of the “Apple Dessert” competition which was held last Thursday as part of another superb meeting of the Ewhurst, Staplecross & Bodiam Garden Society (ESBGS). The guest speaker was Sue Turner, who surprised us all with a very entertaining and rather fascinating talk entitled “Ecuador to Ewhurst”, - the history of the potato. There were lots of interesting and little known facts revealed about this humble vegetable and I for one will never look at this ‘ordinary’ vegetable in quite the same light again. There were several entries for the increasingly popular Annual “Apple Dessert” competition and with a number of strong and delicious dishes to choose from, ‘friendly rivalry’ was there in spoonfulls ! The winning dishes chosen by our guest speaker were announced and are as follows; 1st -- Maxine Hammond, for her delicious “Apple Meringue”. 2nd - Anne Reed for her offering of a “Swedish Apple Charlotte” and 3rd Maggie Whitaker for her delectable “Apple Cinnamon Streusel”, - not a strudel!. All very yummy, and following the results, several teaspoons were produced in order for more ‘tasting & testing’ to be carried out & all was declared excellent. This meeting was a fun and very informative evening, as are all of the events hosted by this group. EWHURST PARISH COUNCIL APPEAL: - The Ewhurst Parish ‘Local Action Plan’ for 2010-2015 is drawing to a close for this duration and the EPC is asking residents - “Are You Interested in Helping to Identify Your Community’s Needs?” If so, would you please consider putting yourself forward to join the Ewhurst Parish Local Action Plan Steering Group. We will be ‘refreshing’ the successful 2010 - 2015 Ewhurst Parish -Local Action Plan and will be consulting with residents, businesses and community groups, in order to determine the Parish’s priorities for the next five years. STAPLECROSS LUNCHEON CLUB APPEAL: Many people are aware of the charming little dining group that meet in the Staplecross Village Hall every month. They are a genuine group of friendly adults who are always pleased to meet up again. The meals are delicious, filling, nutritious, beautifully cooked & presented and with a superb and well varied menu it’s not surprising. This group of people, have been meeting here for a number of years now, and along the way, have now become firm friends and it’s easy to see why. - But, sadly, our numbers are now seriously depleting, whether due to a major reason, like members moving away from the district, or in with family or into care homes, or perhaps illness and sometimes even departing from life itself, or maybe just a minor thing like loss of transport or someone to go with, have over time, brought about this change. For whatever reason, the numbers of members arriving for the meal has seriously declined recently, to the point that questions are now being asked as to the economics and validity of continuing to provide these lunches. The Luncheon Club has a superb group of people ‘In Charge’,- so to speak, - who select the menu’s, prepare, cook, and serve. clear and clean up and these people really enjoy doing so, but there comes a time when money going out, outweighs members coming in. This is where THIS APPEAL comes in !. - WE NEED YOU ! - More members are needed to join our lovely group of diners to help save another local social club from being lost to the community. We NEED YOU, desperately, to come and join us, and be a member of our happy group and save this lovely friendly dining Club from closure. Please come and be part of this happy and well fed group, enjoy the company and make new friends. Rules are few & far between, you don’t even have to live within the Parish boundary, as several people come from outside of our community, - the meal costs are minimal - just £6:00 per person for a two course lunch - and the food is fantastic. STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Just a gentle reminder that this local sport club is hosting a JUMBLE SALE tomorrow that’s Saturday October 10th. It’s being held in the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross. Doors are open at 2.00pm and entrance is 20p per person. Come along, bring big bags and bag your bargains.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Still strutting their stuff around this beautiful countryside of ours are the members of the local Rother Ramblers. Two more walks have been arranged this week for us to enjoy and the first is a 10mile circular meander of Wadhurst Deer Park. Planned for Sunday October 11th when those eager to take part will meet at 10.00am in the Wadhurst village car park, near The Greyhound Pub. OS EXP136.TQ640316.(SatNav TN5 6AZ) There is alternative roadside parking and a picnic lunch is suggested. Your ‘walk leader’ for today will be David and you can contact him on 01580~852432 for all further information. Walk No:2 is in the opposite direction and is an 8.5 mile circular stroll of the beautiful Pett Level via Hastings Country Park. Planned to take place on Wednesday October 14th all those interested in taking part should meet to the East of the Smugglers Inn at Pett Level. OS EXP 124. TQ91134. (SatNav TN35 4HF) at 10.00am. There is parking in the laybys, so please DO NOT PARK in the pub car park. A picnic lunch is again suggested and for more details of this excursion, please contact your ‘walk leaders’ who today, will be Julie & Con. MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE: Once more the sight of the East Sussex Mobile Library Service van will be a welcome sight when it arrives on Thursday October 15th. This time it’s the turn of Staplecross & Cripps Corner residents to enjoy all the services on offer within it’s portals. It will be arriving in Cricketers’ Field, Staplecross at approximately 1.40pm until it departs at 2.10pm for Cripps Corner. Arriving there at 2.20pm, - it will park on the car park of The White Hart Inn - courtesy of the kind landlady, - until it departs from there at 2.45pm for pastures new. But no matter where it’s next destination is, please do make as much use as possible of this amazing and vital free service whilst we do still have the use of it. Try it and see for yourself just what is available for your benefit inside.

STAPLECROSS MCP SCHOOL: It’s that time again ! -- On Friday October 16th, “Phil the Bag” man will be arriving at our lovely little village school once more to collect the mountain of ‘re-cycled gear’ that hopefully will await him. This clever idea was formed to help boost the P.T.F.A. funds which in turn, will benefit all the children of this school The idea works like this; --Bags will be available -from the school- for the donation of all & any textiles, which include household linen, bedding, towels, shoes and clothing. All you have to do is fill them up, return them to the school where they will be weighed and then they’ll be swopped for cash. This cash then goes into the PTFA funds and this will then be swopped for exciting things for the benefit of all the pupils to enjoy. This is a win - win - situation. - You get to de-clutter, in time for the Winter/Christmas season and the school benefits with a little cash injection !. So please do what you can to help support this clever little fund-raising event. If you can’t get to the school to collect the special bags, - any household bin bags will do. Tell all your family and friends and get them to join in. De-cluttering is good for you,- I’m told and the more, the merrier and the heavier, the better. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: These two (2) dates may seem rather in advance, but it’s surprising just how quickly time flies at this time of the year, and these two dates are for events that you really shouldn’t miss ! Event No: 1 is a reminder that Bonfire Night - or Guy Fawkes Night - is rapidly approaching. The date to put in your diary for this years amazing event is Saturday 31st October and is our very own Staplecross Bonfire & Torchlight Procession. From 5.30pm onwards many events will be unfolding within the village, and the main road between Staplecross and Cripps Corner will be closed as usual from between 7.00pm and 10.00pm approximately to allow the fantastic Torchlight Procession to meander it’s way from The Cross Inn, Staplecross to The White Hart Inn at Cripps Corner and back again, culminating in the traditional ceremony of the lighting of the huge bonfire in the village. Event No: 2 is still to do with the excitement of Bonfire Night but perhaps on a more gentler scale. The proprietors of The Castle Inn, at Bodiam would like to invite the residents of Cripps Corner, Ewhurst and Staplecross to a free ‘lantern making event’. This delightful activity is open to all residents, - OF ALL AGES- and will be ‘created’ at our very own Staplecross MC Primary school on Saturday November 7th between 11.00am and 3.00pm. These lanterns made of papier mache will be carried in a traditional Bodiam Lantern Parade around Bodiam Castle, on to the Castle Inn and then to the Bonfire & Firework display a week later. (Friday November 13th - from 5.30pm) If you feel that paper lanterns, - plus lit candles - plus excited children is a sure fire recipe for disasters, - think again, as these lanterns will be lit by battery and will be very safe. Children OF ALL AGES will be very welcome, as this is a treat mainly for them, but everyone - young and not so young - from 3 to 103 - is invited to join in.The lanterns and their bearers will be accompanied by enthusiastic drummers and a magnificent ‘Guy’ to crown the huge bonfire awaiting him back at the Castle Inn grounds. This really is a fantastic evening, full of fun, excitement, good tipple and great food, - it may be a wee bit noisy, but then Bonfire Night always is, and that’s surely half of the fun of it . Reminders will come again, but put these dates in your diary’s now, to ensure you don’t miss any of them !

CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the Parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday October 11th. Trinity 19. at 9.30.am. This service will include Holy Communion (BCP) There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Giles church, Bodiam, but a Morning Praise service held at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross will follow directly after at 11.15.a.m. Both services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and if there is any church matter, on which you need any help or guidance, then please do contact him- either at The Rectory, Ewhurst Green, or by telephone 01580~830268 or via his email which is: [email protected] He would dearly love to offer any assistance he is able to, so just call him.
