COMMUNITY NEWS & VIEWS: VILLAGE IN BLOOM. - Continuing with the great news of last week results, in relation to the South & South East “-In Bloom”- competition. As you all now know, - Ewhurst Green was awarded the Winner in the ‘Small Village’ section and was handed a ‘Silver Gilt’ award for all their efforts,-- the S.S.E.I.B. judges remarks on the day of judging as shown on their assessment forms, made all the hard work, so tirelessly undertaken by the residents and supporting friends so worthwhile. It brought a sense of community belonging, of pride and achievement to this picturesque little English country village, and as a result, ‘Certificates of Excellence’ were also awarded to certain ‘Bloomers’ in recognition of their outstanding contribution in helping the village to achieve this result. These awards are as follows;-- “The White Dog Inn”, ~ For being so welcoming, to allowing the ‘V.I.B. committee to hold meetings in the pub and for the outstanding hanging baskets.--The Churchyard Team of St. James the Great church,~ For maintaining the environment around the church to a very high standard by a small but dedicated band of volunteers. --To the Ewhurst Green Residents Association, steered by Marc, Wally and many others who were invaluable in showing us that if you really want something, you can get it.--To “Bodiam Railway Station-Kent & East Sussex Railways”, ~ Especially Pat & Sheila who maintain a truly delightful garden at the entrance to the station, for preserving the heritage of hop-picking and the age of steam both locally & nationally.-- To Wally & Ruth Close~ For their dedication to getting the preferred design for the village sign, their fabulously colourful front garden and for getting ‘stuck in’ to brambles at every opportunity.-- To Paul & Mary Lester~ For the restoration of their front garden to a design contemporaneous with their house.--To John & Heather Raw~ For getting involved in making the area by the bus stop more pleasing to the eye.--To

EWHURST & BODIAM PARISH NEWS: Last Friday evening (September 11th) a very friendly, but mixed gathering of people arrived at the home of Liz Moore, the Editor of the newly revamped “Ewhurst & Bodiam Parish News”. Liz and her charming husband Jeff invited the many Contributors and Distributors of the Parish News (& the husbands, wives & partners) and all who have helped in the re-launch of this little parish booklet to a delectable and may I say delicious, celebratory supper. We were blessed with cool, but dry weather which allowed many of us to enjoy our drinks outside,- putting the world to rights, as we do, - whilst admiring the fantastic views from their delightful garden. A very enjoyable evening was certainly had by all who attended, - a simple, but so delicious meal, amongst very congenial company in lovely,comfortable surroundings, what more could you ask ? Liz and her supporting colleagues have worked really hard to bring the Parish News back to fruition, - and I certainly think that the thanks should go to them, - so here it is - ‘in print’ - from all your guests of that night, - a huge THANK YOU. -Keep up the good work !

OLDER PEOPLES DAY- 2015: 1st October is officially ‘Older People’s Day’ - an International Day created to recognise and celebrate the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society. To celebrate this, East Sussex County Council and Rother District Council are working together to put on several events aimed at older people. Once again they have partnered with seniors’ forums, the voluntary sector, community groups and other statutory organisations to put together and support a programme of events, across East Sussex, providing a wide variety of fun activities and information. A programme of events is available from libraries and is available to view and download. Many of the events in the programme will be organised by the seniors’ forum in this area and you can join in, or get more involved in these fun events by contacting June Pratley, Engagement & Equality Officer at E.S.C.C. COMMUNITY REMINDERS: Just two gentle, but important reminders of two local events, inviting all within the community to be part of.-- EVENT NO:1 is the annual Macmillan Coffee morning, being held in the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross on Friday September 25th at 10.00am.(THAT’S TODAY!) There will be lots of stalls for you to visit, lots of childrens activities, a Raffle stall, a Tombola stall, lots of cakes to buy & try and of course, tea & coffee to accompany them. This is a very important fund-raising event in this charities calendar, and as you all know, the work that is carried out by the organisation is priceless, so please, come along, buy a cake & a cuppa, enjoy them with family and friends and help support this worthwhile charity.-- EVENT NO:2 is the open invitation to all parents and families of the schoolchildren of the Staplecross MCP School to join them in their Harvest Festival Service at St Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross at 2.30pm (THAT’S TODAY) and afterwards to share their ‘Harvest Tea, in the church room, where those charming and well mannered children from Year 6 will help serve a delicious tea. This is a delightful little school event which involves all the children throughout the school ‘doing their bit’. Preparing for their Harvest Festival Service is part of the children’s R.E. learning, both in terms of what makes a shared celebration and in how they can help other people. This is a very special occasion for all those connected to this superb little village school, so please do try to come along and share it with them.

VILLAGE HALL JUMBLE SALE: Don’t forget that there will be a Mammoth Jumble Sale taking place at the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross on Saturday September 26th (TOMORROW) Doors will open at 2.00pm. ready to admit all those clever people who are looking to bag lots of bargains for little money. So don’t be one of those that’ll miss out on this event, - be there to have a rummage and bag your own bag of bargains !.

MEDIEVAL MOP FAIR: Taking place at Bodiam Castle, this week-end Saturday and Sunday September 26th & 27th. Will be the annual ‘hiring fair’. You are invited to come along and discover some of the medieval jobs that were on offer for those who wanted to work in the castle. Do you think you would have been hired as a castle cook? - a servant? or even a gong scourer? Come along to this fascinating event and discover for yourself ! The castle’s cooks will also be busy in the kitchen area preparing some medieval dishes, just as they would have done for Sir Edward and his distinguished guests during their visit. Come and visit the castle for an day of discovery.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Another two (2) walks have been planned for your enjoyment this week, and how delightful it is to stroll around our very special area in South East England, during the autumn months experiencing the spectacular and amazing colours of the season. Walk No: 1 is an 8 mile circular trip between Ardingly and West Hoathly. Planned for Sunday September 27th the meeting point is Little London, Ardingly OS EXP 135. TQ344304. (SatNav RH17 6TL) at 10.30am. Park in the extensive lay-by on B2028, - opposite the South of England Showground. A picnic lunch is suggested and Adrian will be your ‘walk leader’ for this outing, and for all further information, you may contact him on:01273~514336 or Mob: 07729~861854. Walk No: 2 is planned to take place on Friday October 2nd and is a 10.5 circular meander of Appledore to Woodchurch. The meeting point for this venture is at 10.00am at the car park of Applecore Village Hall. OS EXP 125. TQ955296. EWHURST, STAPLECROSS & BODIAM GARDEN SOCIETY: Following on from their recent successful Autumnal Horticultural Show, this popular local gardening society will be hosting another exciting social evening which includes the increasingly popular “Apple Dessert Competition”. This is for any dessert with apples as the main ingredient and please remember to bring your recipe with you, to share with others. There has been a change in this month’s speaker, as due to unforeseen circumstances, the lady previously booked is unable to attend,- but have no fear, ladies & gentlemen, another superb guest speaker (borrowed from next years selection of speakers!) has very kindly agreed to step into the breach. Therefore, on Thursday October 1st. our guest speaker will be Sue Turner, and the title of her talk will be “Ecuador to Ewhurst, ~ the History of the Potato”. - Don’t be fooled by perhaps the rather mundane title, as this promises to be a surprising and interesting evening. Do try to make a space for this evening’s event, as it is always a popular and well attended date in the diary. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: The Staplecross Bowls Club, Annual Jumble Sale will take place on Saturday October 10th at 2.00pm in the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross. There will be loads of interesting things hidden in the ‘piles of stuff’, on the tables, to hopefully encourage you to part with your coins, to aid this dedicated and friendly local sports club. So, come along and enjoy the event. Entrance will be 20p. with the usual temptations of teas, cakes and a raffle to entice us and to add to the enjoyment.

CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday September 27th. Trinity 17.at 9.30am. This is the special HARVEST FESTIVAL Service and will include Holy Communion (BCP) There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Giles church, Bodiam, but a HARVEST FESTIVAL Service, which will also include Holy Communion, will be held directly after at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross at 11.15am. Both services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and if there is any church matter in which he may offer assistance, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with him.
