‘BIKER AWARE APPEAL’ Having recently had the very sad experience of arranging a family funeral, I was shocked to learn on Monday of the tragic and unnecessary death of another close family member. Second daughter’s Father-in-Law - whilst out enjoying the freedom of biking with friends, on our country roads, was knocked down and killed on the A259 road at Icklesham last weekend. Police, ambulances and the air ambulance were all involved, but sadly he died at the scene of the accident. The driver and passenger of the car involved in this accident, were taken to hospital with thankfully, only minor injuries and sincere wishes are sent to them for a swift and complete recovery. Regardless of any blame, or reason for this horrific accident, may I now make a huge & heartfelt appeal for more “Biker Awareness”. I am always requesting that you- in the form of a motorist, and in any vehicle- to please, be more aware and take extra care when approaching any cyclists (with or without engines!) and horse-riders and even road maintenance work teams. Now, in view of this personal family tragedy with the loss of a lovely man, may I now, more than ever, once more ask that consideration and space, be given to ALL those using our roads. With this glorious weather tempting us to go out & about exploring our wonderful part of the country, and the school holidays soon to be upon us, our roads will become more & more crowded and clogged with traffic of all shapes and sizes. Please therefore, be aware and considerate of all other road users, --- watch your speed, allow extra time for your journey, especially during the holiday periods. Do take extra care, slow down when approaching any hazard, give them a wide berth when overtaking and be polite and respectful. They all have a right to use the roads, --- don’t get mad,- don’t get even, - Just get there - safely.

EWHURST PARISH COUNCIL~ ADDITIONAL PLAY PARK EQUIPMENT:We have been informed that the contractors who are installing our new play equipment, are running a wee bit behind on their current job. As a result of this information, the team that are due to install our play items, now won’t be doing so until the following week. This in effect, means that the Children’s Play Park, will now be closed from Monday July 6th for approximately one week. Playdale and E.P.C. are sorry for the short, unavoidable delay and any inconvenience caused, but hope you’ll agree that the end result will be well worth the extra wait. STAPLECROSS BONFIRE SOCIETY: Just a reminder that this superb and friendly, local charitable society are holding their Family Fun Day & Fete on Saturday July 4th at The Cross Inn, Staplecross between 2.00pm & 5.00pm. There will be loads of things for all the family to see and do and enjoy, - so make sure you come along and take part in this special fund-raising event. There will be music, food, fun & games and lots of stalls to peruse. It’s also free entry, - so don’t miss out, - bring all the family and have a great afternoon.

STAPLECROSS SOCIAL CLUB: For all of those who enjoy a social evening amongst congenial company and like to listen to “rock and blues “ music within nice surroundings, then perhaps you’d be interested in coming along to the Staplecross Social Club, Northiam Road, Staplecross on Saturday July 4th when “The Black Sheep”, - a well known Rock & Blues band will be playing live, for your entertainment, from 8.00pm onwards. Entry is free and there will be a bar with lower prices on most alcohol products and bar snacks will also be available. This is a great little club in which to meet friends and family alike and the premises can also be hired and used for a number of functions and we are so lucky to have such a lovely little venue to use within our parish. STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Keeping apace with their very busy schedule and following on from their popular annual bar-B-Q of Friday July 3rd, the club have four more matches arranged for this week and like last week, all of these are away fixtures - all matches will be played at 2.30pm.unless otherwise stated. The first match will take place on Saturday July 4th against ‘Hellingly’ (5). Tuesday July 7th.sees the team play against ‘Wadhurst’. Match No: 3 is on Wednesday July 8th and their opponents will be ‘Brenchley & Matfield’ and the week will come to a close when the club will face ‘St. Leonards’ with a 2.00pm start on Thursday July 9th. If anyone is in the region of any of these club premises and they’d like to go along and watch the games being played then please do so as supporters are always very welcome. STAPLECROSS STOOLBALL CLUB: Another local sports club where supporters are always very welcome - more so when you come along to support and cheer on our local team, - is our very own stoolball club. This club is based in Northiam Road, Staplecross, where the club have their own pavilion, within the playing field, and where they were the recent hosts of the Staplecross Stoolball Tournament, which was played out last Sunday. Continuing with their busy schedule, the club have two more fixtures for this coming week, both of which are away games and the first match will take place on Tuesday July 7th when the team have a match against Ashburnham commencing at 6.45pm. Match number two will take place on Saturday July 12th. as this will be the turn of the Civil Service Stoolball Club to host their tournament at their home ground at Egerton Park, Bexhill, beginning at 10.30am. This popular and friendly club are always ready to welcome new members, whether you wish to play the game, or just play a supporting role, the person to talk to regarding this is Pauline and you can contact her on 01580~830570 for all further information.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Continuing with their summer schedule of healthy and happy walks, the members of the Rother Ramblers walking group have only two walks planned for this week. The first walk is arranged to take place on Wednesday July 8th and is an 8.5 mile circular stride from High Hurstwood - Crowborough Common. The meeting place is Poundgate car park on Ashdown Forest. OS EXP.135.TQ481284. (SatNav TN22 4DD) at 10.0am. This car park is on a minor road (New Road) which joins the A26 with Camp Hill and is the first (1st) car park on the left when travelling East to West -as shown on Exp 135. Ashdown Forest is a glorious place to stroll along and through at any time of the year, and with the suggestion of a picnic lunch, this promises to be yet another wonderful walk. Second in our strolls this week is a short (ish) country walk from Sidley, - avoiding the workings around the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road and will be of approximately 5 ~ 6 miles in total. Planned to take place on Saturday July 11th the group will meet in Sidley car park OS EXP.124.TQ739092. (SatNav TN39 5BB) at 10.30am.The number 98 bus from Hastings and Bexhill, arrives at 10.15am. A short picnic stop is suggested and all further details can be obtained from your ‘Walk Leader’ for today which will be Janet and you can contact her on 01424~420570.

EWHURST PARISH COUNCIL : This month’s meeting will once again return to the usual venue of St, Mark’s Church room, Northiam Road, Staplecross. Taking place on Thursday July 9th and commencing at 7.30pm. This meeting is open to the public and press alike and allows all residents of our Ewhurst Parish community the perfect opportunity to come along and have your say. Together with your local Parish Councillors, there are usually representatives from the Police, in the form of our PCSO and both Rother District Councillor (Mr. Tony Ganly) and East Sussex County Council (Mrs. Angharad Davies) You’ll be able to question or query, comment or complain on any or all of the things going on within our parish. We are all here to listen to what you have to say and perhaps more importantly, to what you want to happen (or NOT happen) within this community. Some things may take a while to resolve, and sadly some things may well be outside of our scope or jurisdiction, Please be assured that we are all working on your behalf to make our community a better, safer and happier place to live, work and enjoy being in. Look for the big banner outside- there’s usually sufficient car parking and all will be welcome.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES: VILLAGE IN BLOOM: There can be very few people throughout our parish, who are unaware that Ewhurst Green village has been entered in the “Village in Bloom 2015 “ event, - in the ‘Best Kept Small Village Category’. We are all privileged to be part of this competition, - although only on the periphery- as Cripps Corner, Staplecross and Ewhurst Green each form a part of the Ewhurst parish and come together as a whole community. I’m sure that every resident,- whether you actually live in Ewhurst Green or not,- is whole-heartedly behind this effort to win this coveted prize once more. This has been a tremendous, united effort on behalf of the residents of this beautiful little village and thanks must go to each & every-one who has ‘done their bit’ - however large or small -in helping to bring this feat of co-ordination to fruition. Special thanks must go to local Parish Councillor Maggie Whitaker - for all her amazing hard work, not only in co-ordinating the Programme of Events throughout the course but for her knowledge, know-how and enduring stamina. Of course, this also applies to the ‘Village-In-Bloom’ working party/committee and naturally, includes all the unsung and invisible heroes who have helped make this event ‘happen’, The Day of Judgement is: WEDNESDAY JULY 8th - so don’t be surprised to see a few ‘strangers’ strolling around the village, especially if they happen to be carrying clip-boards.- these will be - ‘The Judges’- of this event (and Maggie will also be one of them!) Every resident throughout the whole of the parish, and wherever they may live, wishes the village the very “Best of Luck” and has their fingers crossed for a successful outcome. It will be so very well deserved.

EWHURST GREEN VILLAGE BARBECUE: This is a biennial event, normally held on the village green, but this year it will take place at the Arthur Herdman Pavilion and Playing Field, a little further down the main street, towards Staplecross & Bodiam (SatNav TN32 5TB) on Saturday July 25th. There will be live music from “Mocking Jay” and a superb array of yummy food to tempt you. A licensed bar will also be in operation as well as a great raffle to help ‘encourage’ you to support a few worthwhile charities, by buying a few raffle tickets. Gates will open at 5.30pm and the event will begin at 6.00pm. Admission is by ticket only ( to allow for catering numbers ) and the cost is £12:00 for adults; children under 14 years £6:00 and Pre-school children are FREE. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday July 5th. Trinity 5. at 9.30am. This service will include Holy Communion. A service at St. Giles church, Bodiam, will follow directly after at 11.15am. and this service will also include Holy Communion. There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross.
