EWHURST STAPLECROSS & BODIAM GARDEN SOCIETY: For those of you who recently attended the April meeting of this small but brilliant society, - which also included the first of the gardening shows in their busy calendar, - the Spring Flower Show, - here are the results that many have been waiting to see in print.; - Class 1- A Spring flower arrangement :- 1st Ruth Close, 2nd Pam Dance. Class 2- An arrangement of spring flowers-Novices only :- 1st Hilary Ganly, 2nd Anne Reed. Class 3- A container of cut flowers :- 1st Pam Underhill, 2nd Pam Dance, 3rd Maggie Whitaker. Class 4- A specimen spray of a shrub :- 1st Jennie Lynam, 2nd Barry Longmuir, 3rd Ruth Close. Class 5 - A planted container for spring interest:- Maggie Whitaker. Class 6- An orchid pot plant :- 1st Anne Brookes, 2nd Maggie Whitaker. Class 7- A pot plant grown for it’s foliage:- Pam Underhill. Class 8- Vase of 3 tulips:- 1st Daphne Longmuir, 2nd Jennie Lynam, 3rd Pam Underhill. Class 9- Vase of 3 single flowered daffodils/narcissus :- 1st Ruth Close, 2nd Anne Brookes, 3rd Pam Underhill. Class 10- Vase of 3 double-flowered daffodils/narcissus :- 1st Ella Wood, 2nd Pam Underhill, 3rd Ruth Close. Class 11- Vase of 3 miniature daffodils/narcissus-one variety:- 1st Jennie Lynam, 2nd Pam Underhill, 3rd Judy Winchester. Class 12- Vase of 3 multi-headed daffodils/narcissus:- 1st Anne Brookes, 2nd Pam Underhill, 3rd Daphne Longmuir. The winner of the Angela Evans Cup was won by a very worthy exhibitor, Pam Underhill. There were a record number of entries for this humble little show, which was very encouraging and hopefully bodes well for the remaining 3 shows later in the year. Following a cool, dry spell in March, sadly entries were down for the ‘3x tulips’ class, but this was more than made up for by the many entries in the daffodil/narcissus classes, which were aided and abetted by the warmer and drier weather of the week before. ROTHER RAMBLERS: Continuing their strolls around our countryside, the popular group have organised three (3) walks for us to join in and enjoy. Walk no:1 is for Sunday May 10th and is a 9 mile circular tour of Broad Oak, Heathfield to Mayfield. The members and all who wish to join in will be meeting at the Broad Oak C. P. School, Scotsford Road, Broad Oak, Heathfield at 10.00am. OS EXP136. TQ607226. (SatNav TN21 8UD) and a picnic lunch is suggested. The ‘Walk Leader’ for this stroll is Richard so please contact him on 01424~892865 for more details. Walk No: 2 is an evening stroll of only 5 circular miles,- which is a little meander around Winchelsea and Icklesham. Please meet, on Wednesday May 13th, in the lay-by in Wincheslsea outside the public toilets at 6.30pm. OS EXP125. Last but certainly not least, is walk no: 3 which is a 7 mile circular tour of Netherfield. Taking place on Saturday May 16th all those interested in sharing this walk are to meet up at Netherfield church OS EXP124. TQ723184. (SatNav TN33 9PX) at 10.00am. Roadside parking near the church is available and a picnic lunch is suggested.

MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE: The little van carrying the services of the Mobile Library will be arriving in Ewhurst Green on Thursday May 14th and will be there between 11.10am and 11.40am. This service is about more than just books as it also can help with internet access, DVD’s, Audio tapes, Homework, Hobbies and Educational projects. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at just what is available, so pop inside the van and discover for yourself.

STAPLECROSS STOOLBALL CLUB: Back closer to home now and in time to cheer on our valiant team as they play the first of their two matches this week. The first is a home match against Crowhurst on their home ground at the playing field, Northiam Road, Staplecross on Tuesday May 12th beginning at 6.45pm. Thursday May 14th is the second match which is an ‘away’ fixture against Icklesham. Please come along and support our energetic but always dedicated local team. Seeing supporters cheering you on, on the side-lines, really does give you a boost and helps you along. STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Staying with the sports’ news,- This popular, not so hectic maybe, but nonetheless skilful sports club, have arranged four (4) matches, - all on their home lawns, at the Club Pavilion, on Northiam Road, Staplecross, this week, - so there can be no excuse for not popping along to support them. Match No: 1 is on Sunday May 10th and their opponents are Rotherfield. Match No: 2 will take place on Thursday May 14th when the opposing team will be Polegrove. Fixture No: 3 sees our home club against Rye when they play them on Saturday May 16th and their busy schedule continues with their last match of the week with their opponents being Westfield. ALL matches will commence at 2.30pm, so please do come along and support our local club teams. EWHURST & STAPLECROSS BONFIRE SOCIETY: The old adage, ‘Time flies when you’re having fun’, certainly applies to this popular local society, as it’s that time of the year again, when this amazing social group hold another of their fund-raising events. This time, the event is the society’s Annual Bike Ride & B.B.Q. Taking place on Sunday May 17th at Brede River Farm, on Winchelsea Beach, you are invited to take part in this happy, (and maybe a bit energetic) cycling trek. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday May 10th. Easter 5 at 9.30am.This service will include Holy Communion (BCP) There will be NO SERVICE at St. Giles church, Bodiam on this day. A Morning Praise service at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross will follow directly afterwards at 11.15am.
