SCAM ALERT: This notice has been received from the Sussex Police - Rother Neighbourhood Policing Team. A Bexhill man has issued a warning to other local residents after he received a scam letter telling him he had won £720,000. The eagle eyed resident contacted the police after he received the letter this week, but said he knew it was a scam straight away.The letter, addressed directly to him, was supposedly from the Euromillions International Postcode Lottery, and told him that there was a mix up of names and numbers and that he had won just under £1m- tax free! But to claim his prize, he was asked to contact a Foreign Service Manager, to process the winning claim it looks very official and is addressed from the vice president of the International Lottery Promotions, apparently based in Belgium, urging winners to contact them urgently to collect winnings. The resident came into the Bexhill Police Station to notify officers and to warn others to be on the lookout for similar scams. Sergeant Mark Evans from the Bexhill Neighbourhood Policing Team, Said: “We understand it is very tempting to respond to these lottery letters, who wouldn’t want to win a wonderful prize?, however If you receive one of these letters please contact Action Fraud. “All information is good information when it comes to tracking down those responsible for the network of scams that continue to plague people, particularly the elderly.” To report a fraud, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk. If you ever receive any letters like this, or if you have any reason to be suspicious about anything that is happening around you, be it strangers loitering or behaving oddly or you see vandalism occurring or rubbish being dumped, in fact, if there is anything that gives you cause for concern, then please contact the police.in the first instance by ringing the new direct number which is 101. or you can email them at [email protected] You may not be taken in with letters like this arriving through the

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Still enjoying being out in the free, fresh air and perhaps making the most of the weather before it turns it’s cold and snowy face upon us are those intrepid travellers, the members of the local walking group, the Rother Ramblers. Two more walks are arranged to take place this week and the first is planned for Sunday February 1st. Entitled ‘A figure of 8 around the green spaces of Hastings’, this promises to be an interesting and revealing 10 mile walk for all. For those interested in taking part, please meet up at 10.0am at Hastings train station OS Exp 124.-TQ814096 (SatNavTN341EB) Please note: There is Sunday unrestricted parking in nearby Linton Road, Linton Crescent, Braybrooke Road and Lower Park Road, but please check signs. Suggested lunch in Hastings Old Town-either picnic on the beach or at nearby pubs or cafes. The afternoon section starts at 2.15pm from the Station. Walk No: 2 is slightly shorter, - a mere 7 mile circular from North’s Seat, Hastings. and is arranged for Wednesday February 4th.The meeting point for this stroll is Fairlight Road, Hastings car park, - and sadly a fee is payable. STAPLECROSS & EWHURST GREEN W.I.: Those cheerful members of this lovely and lively group will be meeting again on Tuesday February 3rd at their usual meeting place of St. Mark’s Church room, Northiam Road, Staplecross . The meeting will begin at 2.30pm and once the ‘formal’ business has been dealt with we can settle down to enjoy listening to Mr. Michael Smith who will be telling us all about Sir Ernest Shackleton and his amazing expeditions. Following on from this popular talk will be the very popular and well known “ W.I. tea”. Always very welcome and always much appreciated by members and visitors, - including the speakers- alike. MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE: Wending it’s way through Staplecross and Cripps Corner ONLY will be the little Mobile Library bus, a very familiar sight to the many residents it serves throughout our parish. As stated in previous reports, this service has been changed and separated and Ewhurst and the surrounding community has now become part of the Robertsbridge route. The Mobile Library, previous calling during the morning, will arrive in Cricketers Field, Staplecross on Thursday February 5th at an AFTERNOON time of 1.50pm and will then depart at 2.20pm for Cripps Corner. The Mobile Library van will continue to park on the car park at the White Hart Inn, Cripps Corner, courtesy of the kind landlady, upon it’s arrival at 2.30pm and will depart at 2.55pm for it’s last call of the day at Windmill Hill. Please continue to use and support this wonderful service. It is so important to those who live in our outlying country areas as it allows people who are not able to easily make use of the main branches in the towns by giving them access to various amenities such as the Internet, newspapers and bulletins, DVD’s. and audio books. It can be a great source of information to those doing research or university studies or just doing homework. Lending ‘just books’ is only a small part of the service. Check it out for yourself, and be amazed !

GARDEN SOCIETY EVENING: Mr. Kevin Tooher, who is a lecturer from Hadlow College, will be the welcome guest speaker at this months meeting of the Ewhurst, Staplecross & Bodiam Garden Society. Kevin is a popular and well known lecturer and his talk this evening will be about “Sustainable Gardening”. I’m sure he’ll be inundated with questions regarding this subject, so there should also be lots of advice imparted to get us off to a good start in our gardens this Spring. The society will be meeting in the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross on Thursday February 5th at 7.30pm. Entrance is free to members, (-another good reason to join the club!-) with a small charge to guests and visitors to the area. Do please consider becoming a member yourself of this friendly club which has such a warm and helpful group of members, who are always willing to help out on any gardening ‘hinderance’. An interest in anything horticultural is all that’s needed so come along and dig in !. STAPLECROSS VILLAGE HALL: Everyone knows that a village hall should be the heartbeat of the community, especially in rural areas where activities and amenities can sometimes be sadly lacking for the residents. Well, this is a ‘plug’ for our Village Hall. Situated in Northiam Road, right in the heart of Staplecross village this is a superb Village Hall with something to offer for everyone. It can host a magical children’s party with marauding pirates or pretty princesses, with enough space to run around and repel boarders or unwanted witches or wizards (in the form of Grown ups!.) or to play games or just enjoy the entertainment provided. It can become a beautiful venue for a wedding reception or an anniversary celebration and anything and everything in between !. It has a great kitchen, fully stocked with everything you’d need for any celebration, including a large gas cooker, - big enough to feed an army - and quality crockery and cutlery in which to serve it. The hall itself is extremely well maintained and is supplied with comfy chairs and easily assembled tables, excellent for all sorts of recreational pursuits, such as ~ Bridge and other card clubs, Bingo sessions, Table Sales and various demonstrations for crafts, hobbies or other pastimes, Conference Meetings and other such like Discussion Groups together with many other social activities. Already taking advantage of the size of this hall, and all that is on offer, are the very popular dog training sessions. There are also other training groups, - but for the human form,- in the way of the increasingly popular Pilates,- helping us all to be more supple and healthier and Yoga groups,- bringing much needed inner peace and tranquillity to all participants. Jumble Sales, hosted by various local social groups, are always very popular events, being extremely popular with the public and the various club treasurers alike!. The Staplecross Bonfire Society hold their friendly and fun-filled ‘Bingo’ session meetings frequently in here, and the very welcoming local Dining Club meet here on a monthly basis when the delicious aromas of the delectable meals wafts around making your taste buds tingle and your tummy rumble in anticipation of the delights to come. Our local W.I. host many an afternoon tea for various visiting groups with great success and many compliments.There is also the fantastic Art Group, which meets every Thursday morning and encourages everyone and anyone to come and discover the artist within. The ES&B Gardening Society host monthly meetings here with superb speakers and all things of horticultural interest. Our local Primary School make great use of this venue, for all of the school drama productions and indoor games practices, which in turn, bodes well for other such like establishments, ---perhaps a Theatre group, or a Ballet class ?-- as the hall also has a great stage structure. Maybe you’re considering forming another social group, perhaps Indoor Bowls, or a Cub or Brownie group. Together with a great car park, directly outside, offering a large number of spaces, superb disabled facilities, including ramps and wider doors, this wonderful Village Hall could be just what you’re looking for, for your next venue. DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES: Two exciting but vastly different events are being held at the superb Arthur Herdman Pavilion in Ewhurst Green over the weekend of 13th and 14th February. Taking place on Friday February 13th there will be a very interesting talk by a local resident Mr. Geoff Allum, who hails from nearby Northiam. He, together with his cousin, were the first to row across the Atlantic Ocean, from East to West in 1971. This amazing feat, was undertaken before Sat.Nav was invented, and without the use of a radio or a life-raft. This maritime record was held for 26 years,- no mean feat in itself, as that’s an awful lot of water to paddle about on.. Put this date in your diary and come along and hear the full story. It begins at 7pm and light refreshments will be available during the interval. Phil has returned by popular demand following his previous event of last year and will be demonstrating the techniques for using a sourdough in a range of baking, - from traditional loaves to a modern take on the English Tea Bread. All are designed to be used by you in a normal kitchen He will also cover other options, such as adding various flavours, common problems - and even more important, - their solutions, Together with his “Tips and Tricks”, this event promises to be a great place to come as Phil will be helping by showing us, how to bake better bread!. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday February 1st. Epiphany 4.at 9.30am. This service will include Holy Communion. A Family Service at St.Giles church, Bodiam will follow directly after at 11.15.am. There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross.
